Morgan & Eklund Reaffirms Commitment to HSSE Practices

At Morgan & Eklund (M&E), Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) is an integral component of our business model and critical to our ability to deliver quality services and products to our clients. HSSE planning and compliance is required for every activity and provides the resources, knowledge, and training necessary for personnel to meet HSSE standards and protocols.

Recently, M&E staff completed rescue swimmer training. During this HSSE training, personnel learned and demonstrated how to correctly identify ocean safety risks, use life vests, and perform rescue recoveries with lifeguard board. Completion of a required “Job Safety Analysis” ensures that M&E staff are cognizant and familiar with elimination, substitution, and re-engineering safety tactics, as well as warning signs and systems, training and procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE), all of which contribute to reducing operational risks and the safe completion of any job.

PPE will vary based on a job’s conditions and requirements and could include the following items:

  • Surf Life Vest
  • Recovery Swim Can
  • Throwable Life Ring & Safety Line
  • Lifeguard Swim Board
  • Swim Fins
  • Sunscreen
  • Emergency Telephone
  • Approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for Recovery Personnel
  • Swim Booties
  • Wet Suit (if cold conditions)
  • Tourniquet Kit
  • First Aid Kit
  • Recovery Swimmer Assignment
  • Hypothermia Blanket

During the training, M&E field team members successfully carried out procedural steps to complete a swim line survey. Hand signals and clear communications were confirmed pre-survey, equipment was checked and staged to use if needed, conditions were observed in the region of the swim profile, and the swimmer was continuously watched during the swim profile survey in case emergency procedures needed to be enacted.

M&E is respected as a leading Florida-based land and hydrographic survey firm with a formal Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) program to protect human health, avoid and prevent accidents and injuries, and minimize impact on the environment.

At M&E, we employ many different techniques to ensure safe operations and promote a safe culture throughout our organization. By participating in safety meetings, training, and program management, M&E personnel are dedicated to a high level of attention and dedication to safety, making it possible for M&E to adjust the programs as necessary to meet client requirements in addition to fostering a safety-first mentality by removing the roadblocks to free and open employee participation and ownership of safety culture.
