As a subcontractor to ESA, Morgan & Eklund, Inc. (M&E) performed topographic and bathymetric surveys along Jenkins Creek for a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) shoreline stabilization and dredging project.
FWC was concerned with shoreline subsidence, shoaling, and sedimentation across various site locations in the creek system, limiting access for and possibly entrapping manatees in the spring area. The survey data was used to determine if these accessibility concerns exist. The survey was of sufficient quality and quantity intervals to be utilized for dredging design and permitting if it is deemed necessary to address manatee accessibility issues. Bathymetric transects also incorporated a stream bank evaluation to identify unstable shoreline areas that are contributing to sedimentation. Targeted sediment analysis was completed to determine problematic sediment sources in areas where sedimentation issues or significant erosion is documented.
A combination of single beam and topographic transects, as well as multibeam swath coverage, was used to capture site conditions. The survey area extended from east of the bridge along the shoreline north of the swimming area and north up the spring run to the headspring. The area for the bathymetric survey extended from the bridge to the spring head. Shoreline topographic transects were run to mean high water elevation for the entire area from bridge to spring head on 50’ spacing.
Deliverables included electronic submittal of a survey-grade bathymetric data set, including data presented in PDF and AutoCAD formats and as a shapefile showing depth contours.
